Volklec, a pioneering Midlands-based battery manufacturer, is set to transform the UK’s electrification landscape by licensing cutting-edge technology from China’s Far East Battery (FEB). This landmark deal marks a bold step toward industrial-scale battery production, kicking off at the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC) later this year. With a focus on high-value sectors like automotive, aerospace, marine, and off-highway, Volklec’s advanced lithium-ion cells promise to fill a critical supply chain gap. Here’s how this innovative partnership is powering the future.

A Game-Changing Collaboration

After an exhaustive global search, Volklec secured an exclusive agreement with FEB, a leader in battery design and energy solutions since 2009. This first-of-its-kind technology and knowledge transfer brings FEB’s proven expertise to Coventry, backed by their specialists ensuring top-tier production quality. “The UK urgently needs independent battery makers,” says Phil Popham, Volklec’s Executive Director and former Jaguar Land Rover and Lotus Cars leader. “Our thriving startup scene—from motorsport to heavy-duty off-highway—demands reliable, high-quality supply. We’re here to make that happen.”

Two Powerful Cell Types

Volklec will produce two advanced lithium-ion 21700 cylindrical cells:

  • Energy Cell: A compact NMC-chemistry design for e-mobility and energy storage, hitting production first on UKBIC’s 100MWh line.
  • Power Cell: A high-performance option launching later, tailored for specialist applications in automotive, aerospace, marine, and off-highway sectors.

By 2026, a 1GWh line will boost capacity, with plans for a £1bn, 10GWh gigafactory by 2030—creating over 1,000 skilled jobs. Orders are open now, signaling Volklec’s fast-to-market approach.

Leadership with Vision

Popham leads a stellar team:

  • Ron Lee, Chief Technical and Manufacturing Officer, ex-Jaguar Land Rover powertrain expert.
  • Shakeel Meharban, Chief Commercial Officer, formerly of McLaren Applied’s automotive unit.
  • Nikki Rimmington, Head of Strategy, with prior experience at InoBat Auto.

This crew blends deep industry know-how with a drive to decarbonize, positioning Volklec as the UK’s sole independent battery maker.
