According to the Kogod School of Business’s 2024 American-made index, Tesla’s vehicles boast an impressive domestic content, with the Model 3 Performance topping the charts at 87.5 percent. On the flip side, the tariffs could spell trouble for several foreign automakers. Brands such as Audi, BMW, Lexus, Mazda, and Toyota find themselves in a precarious position, with many of their models ranking low on the American-made index. Affordable sports cars like the Mazda Miata, Subaru BRZ, Toyota GR86, and GR Corolla, along with BMW’s M3 and Z4, score a mere 1 percent.

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has vowed to explore “all options on the table” to counteract these tariffs.

As prices for foreign-imported cars rise, former GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz suggests that these tariffs are a long-overdue move. “The tariffs Trump is putting into effect merely mirror (roughly) the ones our major trading partners have had in effect for decades,” Lutz remarked, emphasizing the need for the US to safeguard its industry.

While the European Union currently imposes a 10 percent tariff on US-imported cars, the potential reduction to 2.5 percent could ease tensions. However, Lutz warns that tariff-free imports, while keeping consumer prices low, also lead to a loss of manufacturing jobs and a national decline. “These tariffs will cause some short-term pain and dislocation, but the adjustment will be relatively rapid and to the benefit of global trade,” he concluded.
