Trump’s Tariff Tango: The Impact on the Auto Industry
In a move that has sent ripples through the automotive world, President Trump has announced a 25 percent tariff on all cars built outside the United States. This sweeping change, effective April 3, is set to affect not only vehicles from Canada and Mexico but also foreign-made parts that cross American borders. As the automotive industry gears up to navigate these turbulent waters, the question looms large: Who will emerge as the winners and losers in this high-stakes game?
The Big Winners: Domestic Giants and the Tesla Advantage
Leading the charge in this new era of tariffs is Tesla, a company that has already carved out a niche in the American-made landscape. According to the Kogod School of Business’s 2024 American-made index, Tesla’s vehicles boast an impressive domestic content, with the Model 3 Performance topping the charts at 87.5 percent. Not far behind are the Model Y, Cybertruck, Model S, and Model X, each with over 80 percent domestic content.
However, Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk has made it clear that the company won’t come away unscathed. Despite producing its motors and batteries domestically, Tesla still relies heavily on parts imported from China. Musk warned on social media, “Important to note that Tesla is NOT unscathed here. Ford also stands to benefit, with its iconic Mustang lineup boasting 80 percent domestic parts. The Big Losers: Foreign Brands Face the Heat
On the flip side, the tariffs could spell trouble for several foreign automakers. Brands such as Audi, BMW, Lexus, Mazda, and Toyota find themselves in a precarious position, with many of their models ranking low on the American-made index. Affordable sports cars like the Mazda Miata, Subaru BRZ, Toyota GR86, and GR Corolla, along with BMW’s M3 and Z4, score a mere 1 percent.
Japan, where automobiles account for 28.3 percent of exports to the US, is particularly vulnerable. The announcement has already triggered a drop in shares for Nissan, Toyota, and Honda. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has vowed to explore “all options on the table
” to counteract these tariffs.

As prices for foreign-imported cars rise, former GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz suggests that these tariffs are a long-overdue move. “The tariffs Trump is putting into effect merely mirror (roughly) the ones our major trading partners have had in effect for decades,
” Lutz remarked, emphasizing the need for the US to safeguard its industry.
While the European Union currently imposes a 10 percent tariff on US-imported cars, the potential reduction to 2.5 percent could ease tensions. However, Lutz warns that tariff-free imports, while keeping consumer prices low, also lead to a loss of manufacturing jobs and a national decline. “These tariffs will cause some short-term pain and dislocation, but the adjustment will be relatively rapid and to the benefit of global trade,
” he concluded.
