After more than a decade, the Toyota 4Runner finally embraces a new era, bringing advanced technology, an optional hybrid powertrain, and an expanded range of trims to satisfy diverse driver preferences.

For years, the 4Runner has been an outlier, a throwback to an age when rugged, body-on-frame SUVs dominated the landscape. Despite its outdated design, Toyota’s fifth-generation 4Runner maintained strong sales, with 92,156 units sold in 2024. Its durability and off-road credibility likely contributed to its enduring appeal. Now, however, the redesigned 2025 model integrates modern advancements while preserving the rugged spirit that has defined it for decades.

A Platform Built for Adventure

The sixth-generation 4Runner shares Toyota’s TNGA-F platform with the new Land Cruiser and Lexus GX. Essentially an SUV counterpart to the Tacoma pickup, it features similar mechanical components, configurations, and even design elements. With nine available trim levels—including the new premium Platinum and overlanding-focused Trailhunter—the latest 4Runner caters to an even broader audience.

The fresh design enhances its muscular stance, particularly in off-road-oriented trims like the TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter, which ride on 33-inch all-terrain tires. The latter two trims boast a heritage-inspired grille with bold TOYOTA lettering, while other models retain the standard Toyota badge. Signature design cues such as distinctive rear quarter windows and the classic roll-down rear liftgate window remain, ensuring the new 4Runner maintains its recognizable identity. Despite slight growth in exterior dimensions, maneuverability in tight spaces remains a strong suit.

Enhanced Performance and Powertrain Options

Farewell to the outgoing 270-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 and five-speed automatic transmission. The new 4Runner adopts a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 278 horsepower and paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, a hybrid variant—available on most trims and standard on the Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter—boosts power output to 326 horsepower and significantly increases torque to 465 lb-ft.

The drivetrain lineup includes rear-wheel drive as standard on select models, a part-time four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case, and a full-time four-wheel-drive option with an electronic locking center differential (exclusive to Platinum and hybrid Limited trims). A limited-slip rear differential comes standard on most variants, while off-road-focused trims like the TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter are equipped with an electronic locking rear differential. Maximum towing capacity sees an increase from 5,000 to 6,000 pounds.

Though more powerful, the four-cylinder engine lacks auditory excitement, and the eight-speed transmission hesitates on downshifts. However, the new setup significantly outperforms its predecessor, with peak torque arriving at just 1,700 rpm compared to the V6’s 4,400 rpm. Enhanced fuel efficiency is another benefit, with non-hybrid four-wheel-drive models achieving 21 mpg combined, while rear-wheel-drive versions reach 22 mpg. The hybrid model offers even greater efficiency at 23 mpg combined, along with a sharper throttle response. However, the hybrid system adds weight and can feel underwhelming during extended acceleration. Additionally, the battery placement under the cargo floor raises the loading height and removes the third-row seating option.

Improved Ride and Handling

On the road, the 2025 4Runner delivers a vastly refined driving experience. The pronounced body roll and dive under braking that characterized the previous generation have been minimized. Solid body control and a more composed ride contribute to a confident drive, even on models equipped with the available 20-inch wheels. The Limited and Platinum trims further elevate comfort with adaptive dampers and customizable drive modes, including Comfort, Sport S+, and Custom.

Off-road performance remains a hallmark of the 4Runner. The Trailhunter trim features an integrated roof rack, high-mount snorkel intake, underbody protection, and a modest suspension lift that delivers 10.1 inches of ground clearance. Like the TRD Pro, it benefits from an electronic disconnecting front sway bar for increased articulation. The main distinction lies in suspension tuning: the Trailhunter utilizes 2.5-inch ARB Old Man Emu dampers designed for technical terrain, while the TRD Pro incorporates manually adjustable 2.5-inch Fox internal-bypass shocks. A TRD intake and cat-back exhaust complete the Pro’s performance-oriented package.

The TRD Pro thrives in demanding conditions, offering precise steering and a wide stance for stability. While not as extreme as the Bronco Raptor with its 37-inch tires, the 4Runner absorbs rough terrain with confidence. Enthusiasts may wish for a lighter powertrain option or even the 349-horsepower twin-turbo V6 from the Lexus GX550, but the TRD Pro still delivers an exhilarating off-road experience.

A Modernized Cabin with Practical Features

Inside, the 4Runner’s cabin exudes functionality and modernity. The layout is ergonomic, with physical buttons and knobs for climate and off-road settings. A rotary dial manages drive modes and the four-wheel-drive system. Most trims feature a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.0-inch center touchscreen, though lower trims come with smaller 7.0- and 8.0-inch displays.

Seating comfort has improved, particularly in the TRD Pro, which avoids the bulky suspension-integrated seats found in the Tacoma. Rear legroom has increased by 1.9 inches, offering better accommodation for taller passengers. The reclining second-row seats enhance comfort, while the optional third row (available only on the SR5 and non-hybrid Limited trims) remains best suited for occasional use due to its low seating position.

Choosing the Right 4Runner

At its base price of $42,220, the SR5 trim delivers solid value, while higher trims justify their cost with unique features and enhancements. However, as prices exceed $65,000, buyers may find themselves considering the Lexus GX for a more premium experience. The TRD Off-Road trim emerges as a compelling choice at $50,640, offering serious off-road capability with optional upgrades. The hybrid system, available for an additional $2,800, may not be a must-have for all buyers.

Ultimately, the 2025 Toyota 4Runner’s greatest strength lies in its diverse configurations, allowing drivers to find the perfect balance of performance, comfort, and capability for their needs.
