The 2025 Lexus LX 700h marks a bold evolution for Toyota’s luxury lineup, blending hybrid technology with the rugged DNA of the iconic Land Cruiser. While Lexus has quietly pioneered gas-electric powertrains since 2005, the LX series—born in 1995—remained a holdout until now. Traditionally, buyers of this upscale, off-road-ready SUV prioritized luxury and capability over fuel efficiency. However, the new LX 700h changes the game by enhancing both performance and economy, proving that hybrid SUVs can deliver more than just mileage.

Toyota has recently flexed its hybrid expertise in models like the Tundra and Sequoia, using electric motors to amplify power. The LX 700h follows suit, ditching the i-Force Max badge but packing the same punch. Compared to the gas-only LX 600, this hybrid version offers a significant leap in torque and a solid boost in horsepower, redefining what a luxury off-road SUV can achieve.

What Sets the 2025 Lexus LX 700h Apart?

Introduced in 2022 as the premium twin to the 300-Series Land Cruiser, the LX gains its first hybrid variant for 2025. Under the hood lies a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V-6 paired with hybrid assist, a setup shared with top-tier Toyota trucks. This powertrain delivers 457 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque—outmuscling the LX 600 by a wide margin. Additionally, the Overtrail trim debuts this year, tailored for off-road enthusiasts with features like locking differentials and all-terrain tires. Notably, it’s the most budget-friendly LX 700h option, exclusively tied to the hybrid system.

Driving Impressions: On and Off the Road

To test its mettle, I piloted the LX 700h Overtrail through a rugged off-road course in Napa Valley. With tools like Multi-Terrain Select, crawl control, and locking differentials, it’s equipped for tough terrain. Yet, simply engaging low range and leveraging the air suspension’s max height conquered the obstacles effortlessly. The hybrid system shines here, delivering instant torque from the electric motor, which pairs seamlessly with the low-range gearing for unstoppable traction.

On pavement, the experience shifts. The steering lacks personality—precise but devoid of feedback—while the brakes feel inconsistent, grabbing early then softening. The ride, meanwhile, leans soft, almost buoyant, reminiscent of classic American cruisers. Switching to Sport S+ tightens things up, though it overdoes throttle response. For the best balance, I recommend Custom mode: firm up the suspension but keep the rest relaxed.

Compared to the LX 600, the hybrid’s extra power stands out, smoothing acceleration and adding punch from a standstill. Although it’s 400 pounds heavier, the 700h shaves half a second off the 0-60 time, hitting it in 6.4 seconds. However, range disappoints. Despite a slight MPG bump, the smaller 18-gallon tank limits it to 222 miles per fill-up—a trade-off for the hybrid hardware.

Living with the LX 700h

Don’t let its imposing stance fool you—the LX 700h is more maneuverable than it looks. Its 112.2-inch wheelbase matches the 4Runner’s, keeping it nimble for a luxury off-road SUV. Inside, the hybrid swaps analog gauges for a digital cluster and adopts a Prius-like shifter, setting it apart from the LX 600. A 12.3-inch touchscreen dominates the dash, while a 7-inch lower display tracks off-road stats—functional, if a bit redundant.

The front seats cocoon you in comfort, perfect for long drives or rugged trails. Second-row space, however, feels average unless you spring for the Ultra Luxury trim’s recliners. Cargo capacity takes a hit from the hybrid battery, dropping to 31 cubic feet in the two-row setup versus the LX 600’s 46. For practicality, skip the third row—it’s cramped and compromises usability.

Should You Buy the 2025 Lexus LX 700h?

The luxury SUV market brims with options, from body-on-frame rivals like the Escalade and Navigator to unibody stars like the BMW X7. Few, however, rival the LX 700h Overtrail’s off-road chops. On pavement, competitors often deliver a sharper ride, and many boast roomier cabins. Yet, the hybrid’s value shines through: just $4,000 more than a comparable LX 600, it nets you 12% more power and 22% more torque—plus exclusive access to the Overtrail trim.

Pros and Cons

What We Love:

  • Seamless hybrid power elevates performance.
  • Unmatched off-road capability for its class.
  • Plenty of physical buttons for easy control.

What We Don’t:

  • Fuel range lags behind expectations.
  • Ride quality feels dated, even among peers.
  • Interior space underwhelms for the price.

In short, the 2025 Lexus LX 700h redefines luxury off-road SUVs with hybrid efficiency and robust power. It’s not flawless, but for those craving capability with a modern twist, it’s a standout choice.
